In all my past moving experiences, Ive never walked away thinking wow, what a great experience! or wow, it was an amazing experience working with that broker and I cant wait to use them for our next move. James & Peter were truly an exception and stood out in a city of brokers. They are honest and truly looking out for their clients best interests; even if it means a smaller broker fee for them. We rented a 1BR walk-up in Cobble Hill and James & Peter treated us with the same respect as if we were buying a brownstone. After a disheartening Saturday with other brokers (full of deception, confusing application processes, lost apartments etc.), Sunday was a dream once we walked into Smith Hanten.James Lola is the broker we worked with. He immediately made us feel like we were in good hands. Sitting us down and talking us through the process of the apartments we would be seeing that day. He was honest, straight forward, and made the whole rental process less intimidating (we are moving up to NY from DC). We saw two exclusive listings that day. Both gorgeous options in Boerum Hill. We sprung for the second one we saw, and the application process to follow was simple. We were lucky enough to have lease in hand by 5pm that day!!In short - do yourself a favor and start your apartment hunt with Smith Hanten. But Peter completely changed my view of the whole apartment hunting experience. He was so helpful, completely straightforward, and just an all around good guy. After meeting broker after broker who frankly extended the stereotype of NYC brokers, I was beyond surprised to find Peter. He made the entire process feel like a small town operation and one that focused on personal service. He really does care about his landlords and the tenants and you could see it even in the way that the neighbors greeted him, the landlords spoke about him, and in the service I received during the lease process. I sent Peter an email and within a few hours was checking out the place. Comment: Peter is a businessperson like any other broker, but he seems to take pride in his work and care about finding the right apartment for his clients. My husband and I have been fairly dejected about the offerings in our price range and have been taken to a lot of places that just are not worth the price. Peter, on the other hand, asked us a lot of questions, quickly came to understand our situation, and then spoke to us in our language for the rest of the afternoon.Neither of the first two places he showed us ended up working out, but we are very excited to continue working with someone who actually pays attention to what his clients need and why.

Comment: Peter was instrumental in my move with my girlfriend. Like everyone knows (if you dont than pay attention to these next seven words) moving to NYC is very, very hard. If you have no credit and no job, even with a guarantor, finding an apartment is almost ludicrious. We quickly learned that we needed to find a broker, and thankfully the first place we walked into was Smith Hanten.Peter instantly treated us as friends. He gave us the straigt dope on how real estate in the city works and has a wonderful sense of how each neighboorhood will work for you, even if he doesnt have anything there. He managed to acknowlege how difficult it is to find place without making us feel that we wouldnt. In fact, we couldnt have been more hopeful after we left that we would find something perfect. And not but two days later, we did.Bottom line, you need someone on your side in this crazy city, and Peter was that guy for us. We couldnt be more grateful.
